Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) is an ubiquitous infectious agent of man. Although asymptomatic infections are probably common, HSV infections may be accompanied by vesicular eruptions of the skin or mucous membranes. Both HSV Types 1 and 2 can cause severe clinical diseases including keratoconjunctivitis, meningitis, encephalitis, eczema herpeticum and generalized infection. Serologic tests for the detection of antibodies are useful in determining the immune status.
The Herpes Simplex antigen preparations are partially purified to reduce host cell components. The antigens are inactivated through this purification process and are tested for infectivity prior to release. The Herpes Simplex Type 2 antigen yields high sensitivity and low background in the ELISA assay.
Herpes Simplex Type 2 Antigen, H2033-42B, is prepared by glycine extraction of Vero cells infected with Herpes Simplex Type 2, strain G. This antigen has very little reactivity with antibodies against Type 1 Herpes Simplex Virus.
